This thesis was funded by The Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland during 1992-1995 while I was employed as Clinical Lecturer there. The post took me intermittently during 1992-1993 to Tabuk, Saudi Arabia where RCSI ran a hospital. The thesis drew together several different strands involving the development of the first fetal growth charts specifically designed for an Arab population as well as assessing the role of Insulin-like Growth Factor I and Insulin-like Growth Factor-binding protein 1 in fetal growth and outcome in normal and diabetic pregnancies. I undertook the laboratory assays at St. Bartholomew's Hospital under the supervision of Professor Chard.
